We live so intensely that we often overlook an innate and involuntary process of our body—one that could be the key to our well-being. Breathing, something we do about 21,000 times a day, has a profound impact on our organism and affects many aspects that we usually ignore.
During exhalation, we activate the parasympathetic state of the brain, which generates a feeling of calm and serenity, helping us regulate our emotions and mitigate anxiety. On the other hand, during inhalation, the sympathetic state is activated, preparing us for action. With this in mind, the practice of breathwork can bring us numerous benefits.
And what benefits?
Breathwork is the active way of consciously changing the rhythm, frequency and depth of breathing to access and process mental, physical and emotional tension and enter a higher or altered state of consciousness.
- By hyperventilating we release CO2 which is acidic so we alkalize the PH of the blood.
- We saturate the blood with O2, from 98% to 99.9%
- CO2 is a vasodilator while O2 is a vasoconstrictor, so we have a vasoconstriction, which is why by oxygenating less we “disconnect” from our thinking brain.(This can also cause a feeling of dizziness)
- By decreasing calcium ions, muscle excitability increases so we can feel a tingling sensation. The lung surface increases from 70 to 100 m2, a greater lung surface means greater longevity.
- We release adrenaline.
